Naomi’s Challah
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 pkgs dry yeast
  • 4 eggs
  • 8 – 10 cups flour
  • 3 TAB wheat germ (opt.)
Instructions
  1. Dissolve yeast in 1 cup warm water with 1 TAB sugar added.
  2. While it is proofing combine 6 cups of flour with eggs, oil, sugar, and wheat germ.
  3. Add yeast mixture, other 1/2 cup of warm water and as much of rest of flour as needed to make nice bread dough.
  4. Cover with a thin layer of oil and a cloth and let rise til double in bulk.
  5. Remove from pan onto well floured board or marble slab, punch down and knead.
  6. Divide into 3 portions and if braiding divide each third again into 3 pieces.
  7. Roll and braid.
  8. Put into well greased pans and let rise til double in bulk.
  9. Brush each loaf with some beaten egg and sprinkle with poppy seeds.
  10. Bake at 350 for 1 hour or til done.
  11. Turn out on wire rack to cool.
