| Naomi’s Challah |
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 pkgs dry yeast
- 4 eggs
- 8 – 10 cups flour
- 3 TAB wheat germ (opt.)
Instructions
- Dissolve yeast in 1 cup warm water with 1 TAB sugar added.
- While it is proofing combine 6 cups of flour with eggs, oil, sugar, and wheat germ.
- Add yeast mixture, other 1/2 cup of warm water and as much of rest of flour as needed to make nice bread dough.
- Cover with a thin layer of oil and a cloth and let rise til double in bulk.
- Remove from pan onto well floured board or marble slab, punch down and knead.
- Divide into 3 portions and if braiding divide each third again into 3 pieces.
- Roll and braid.
- Put into well greased pans and let rise til double in bulk.
- Brush each loaf with some beaten egg and sprinkle with poppy seeds.
- Bake at 350 for 1 hour or til done.
- Turn out on wire rack to cool.
