German Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
- 1 4 oz package sweet baking chocolate
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teas. baking soda
- 1/2 cup margarine or butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teas. vanilla
- 3 egg yolks
- 2/3 cups buttermilk
- 5 beaten egg whites
Instructions
- Melt chocolate in water
- Cream butter, sugar and vanilla
- Add egg yolks
- Add chocolate
- Mix in dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk
- In a separate bowl beat the egg whites until stiff
- Fold chocolate mixture into eggs whites, very gently
- Grease and flour two 9 inch round cake pans
- Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes
- Frost on top and between layers with German chocolate frosting.
- Frost sides with a basic chocolate frosting if desired.
