German Chocolate Cake

Ingredients
  • 1 4 oz package sweet baking chocolate
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teas. baking soda
  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teas. vanilla
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2/3 cups buttermilk
  • 5 beaten egg whites
Instructions
  1. Melt chocolate in water
  2. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla
  3. Add egg yolks
  4. Add chocolate
  5. Mix in dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk
  6. In a separate bowl beat the egg whites until stiff
  7. Fold chocolate mixture into eggs whites, very gently
  8. Grease and flour two 9 inch round cake pans
  9. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes
  10. Frost on top and between layers with German chocolate frosting.
  11. Frost sides with a basic chocolate frosting if desired.
