Baklava

Ingredients
  • 1 package filo dough
  • Butter (non-salted works best)
  • Filling:
  • 1 lb. chopped walnuts
  • 1 TAB cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teas. ground cloves
  • 3/4 baking powder
  • Syrup:
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 TAB lemon juice
Instructions
  1. Mix together filling ingredients.
  2. Melt butter
  3. Butter a large flat baking pan, 14×10 inch works best.
  4. Lay in 7 or so sheets of filo, buttering between each sheet
  5. Sprinkle generously with nut mixture.
  6. Add two more filo sheets and
  7. Sprinkle more of nut mixture on.
  8. Repeat this process until there are seven sheets of filo left.
  9. Add these sheets without nuts but buttering inbetween.
  10. Cut though top layers into diamonds before you bake.
  11. Bake at 350 for 30 min, then at 300 for 45 min.
  12. While filo bakes make syrup.
  13. Dissolve sugar, boil briskly till 220 on a candy therm.
  14. Then add 2 TAB honey.
  15. Let cool.
  16. When filo is removed from oven immediately pour syrup over entire pan.
  17. Let sit for 24 hours.
  18. Cut all the way though to serve.
